the story of
blessed edmund rice

In the late 1700s, Edmund Rice and a group of young men in Waterford, Ireland, inspired by their Catholic faith and a desire to serve the poor, founded a free school for boys in 1802. Despite many challenges, they developed a faith-filled and relational model of education. They later became the Christian Brothers, formally established in 1820.

Edmund’s deep faith and vision led to the growth of schools in Ireland and globally. In 1868, the Christian Brothers began their long-term mission in Australia, eventually opening 120 schools across the country.

Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) was established in 2007 to carry forward Edmund’s mission in a modern context. Today, EREA serves over 40,000 young people nationwide and is part of a global network committed to the values of faith, justice, and inclusion.

EREA is committed to creating an environment in which the safety, wellbeing and participation of all children and young people are paramount.
